Instagram is testing a new standalone app focused on sharing in-the-moment content.
The Snapchat-like app, called “Instants”, allows users to share disappearing photos and short videos that last 24 hours and can only be viewed once.
Users can only capture content using the app’s in-built camera, with no option to upload from their camera roll or apply edits beyond basic text. Posts can be shared with a limited audience, including mutual followers and close friends.
A spokesperson for Meta said the app is designed to “give people low-pressure ways to connect with friends”.
“We’re exploring multiple versions of Instants to see what people like, and will listen to our community,” the spokesperson added.
The app is currently being tested in Spain and Italy, with no confirmation yet on a wider rollout.
The move is the latest in a long line of features the company has adapted from Snap Inc., including Stories and disappearing messages, following its failed attempt to acquire Snapchat in 2013.
Evan Spiegel, for his part, has leaned into the rivalry – his LinkedIn profile currently lists his title as "VP Product @ Meta."
