TikTok, Visa launch debit card for UK content creators

TikTok and Visa have teamed up to launch a debit card that lets UK creators access earnings quicker.

The “Creator Card” is designed to address the cash flow challenges creators face – particularly the delays between earning money on a platform and being able to spend it.

Described as a “first of its kind”, it is aimed primarily at TikTok LIVE creators, who earn through virtual gifts sent by viewers during live broadcasts. Those gifts are converted into in-app diamonds before being exchanged for real income – a process that typically arrives in irregular bursts, creating gaps that can make it harder to cover costs or reinvest in a business.

With the card, creators can access earnings quicker and spend immediately, TikTok said. It also allows creators to separate their business and personal finances,  something Visa research suggests most currently lack.

A survey of 1,000 UK professional content creators, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Visa, found that 49% have experienced late or inconsistent payments that affected their ability to run their business, 41% have turned down opportunities due to cash flow issues, and 37% say payment delays cause stress or anxiety.

Lucy Demery, SVP and Head of Visa Commercial Solutions Europe said the card will “give creators faster access to income from TikTok LIVE, brand partnerships, and platform payouts” so they can “spend, plan, and reinvest in their business”

Paula D'Urbano, Country Manager for TikTok LIVE UK, Ireland and Baltics, added that the partnership gives creators more ways to manage their rewards and turn their work into a sustainable career.

The launch comes as  TikTok expands its financial services ambitions more broadly. Last month, Reuters reported that the platform is seeking approval from the Brazilian central bank to operate as a lending and payments fintech.
